Chris Evert Reveals Stage 1 of Cancer Diagnosis and Says She’ll Cover Australian Open from Home While Undergoing Chemo

Tennis Hall-of-Famer and broadcaster Chris Evert revealed today that she has stage 1C ovarian cancer.

Evert, who is 67, was diagnosed last year after undergoing a preventative hysterectomy, she said. Cancer has not been detected elsewhere in her body, according to a piece she co-wrote with Chris McKendry on ESPN.com. Evert also stated that she started her first of six rounds this week of chemotherapy.

“I feel extremely lucky they caught it very early,” Evert said in a tweet announcing the ESPN story. “And expect positive results from mine chemo plan .”

Evert also revealed that she still plans to participate in ESPN’s coverage of the Australian Open, which begins Monday and runs through January 30. The 18-time Grand Slam singles champ won that tournament twice, in 1982 and 1984.

In the ESPN.com article, McKendry describes her reaction to Evert’s diagnosis of cancer on December 7, last year. “My friend Chrissie has Cancer. Her sister Jeanne had died from the disease. My god.”

Evert said, after some reflection, that he had lived a very happy life. There are still many challenges ahead. However, I feel secure knowing that the chemotherapy is to prevent cancer from returning .”

Reflecting on her sister’s battle with cancer, which she lost in 2020, Everet said, “When I go into chemo, she is my inspiration. She’ll always be my inspiration. She’ll help me get through it .”

A post on the Australian Open Twitter page retweeting Evert’s announcement said, “Thinking about you here and wishing for you a speedy recovery .”

ESPN PR also shared Evert’s tweet with well-wishes. “Our thoughts and prayers are with @ChrissieEvert, ESPN tennis analyst, & her family as they reveal an ovarian carcinoma diagnosis .”
